9:00 am Lessons from Rip Van Winkle - Option Strategies to Quell Fear and Enhance Returns

Philip Gocke, Managing Director of the Options Industry Council discusses the practical application of risk reducing strategies in the current market environment. The presentation will highlight studies by the University of Massachusetts, "Loosening Your Collar: Alternative Implementations of QQQ Collars"by Ed Szado and Thomas Schneeweis and "5 years of RUT buy-write" by Ed Szado and Nikunj Kapadia.

The collar study covers an eleven year period where the authors found that a long protective collar strategy using 6-month put purchases and consecutive 1-month call writes earned almost 185% while QQQ experienced a lost decade – losing 3%. These returns came while reducing risk by almost 65%. The UMass study, "15 Years of Russell 2000 Buy-Write" concludes that a passive buy-write strategy of one month to expiration calls on the Russell 2000 ETF consistently outperformed the index, returning 263% while the return on the RUT was 226%. Over the entire period the risk for the buy-write portfolio was almost 4 ½ percentage points lower than for the RUT portfolio.

12:30 pm Identifying Your Legal Rights in International Investments After Morrison v. National Australia Bank
The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Morrison v. National Australia Bank case significantly restricted the rights of investors to bring legal claims in U.S. courts related to their investments in non-U.S. securities. Many investors do not have a clear understanding of how their rights have been affected or what redress they can seek in overseas courts. This session will examine the affect that the Morrison decision had on investors and what pension funds should be doing to make sure they are protecting their rights in the U.S. and abroad, and importantly in recovering money from actions that may be taking place overseas.
