Conference Benefits:

Art collections and collections of collectible objects often begin as a passion, which results in a substantial investment over time. Frequently these collections grow in value significantly over many years or decades and create a new responsibility, which most "collectors" rarely understand. There are, for instance many laws, of which most collectors are unaware resulting in excessive and unnecessarily taxation to estate recipients because of improper preparation. Art and many collectibles have a unique set of regulations, which must be adhered to. Knowing these unique regulations and nuances could potentially prevent excessive tax issues, estate issues, and other problems. Our experts understand the traps collectors fall into, such as improper insurance riders or seriously undervalued appraisals resulting in significant losses of replacement value, improper appraisal certifications resulting in losses, improper planning for donations of collectibles, resulting in losses and unnecessary taxation, and so on. You'll also hear about investment strategies, how to avoid paying improper prices, how to avoid purchase of fraudulent collectibles and artwork, what you should be doing with your collection if you're a young collector, and what you should be thinking about if you're over 55.

Topics of Discussion Will Include:

Tax, Trust and Estate Planning Issues for Art and Collectibles: The Individual and Family Issues Related to the Lifetime and
  Ownership of these Assets.
Determining a Collection's Value: The Role of an Appraiser and Cataloging a Collection.
Collecting for Passion or Investment: Building a Long Term Collecting Strategy.
The Use of Art, Collectibles & Other Personal Property As Collateral
The Elements of Art Law: A Guide to Understand and Benefit from the Tax Code.
Seeking Appropriate Advisers: The Necessary Triangle of Legal, Financial and Independent Art & Collectible Advisors.
Protecting the Value of a Collection: Strategies for Appropriate Insurance Coverage and Storage.
Personal Property for Philanthropic Purposes: Important Tax Considerations; Gift Planning Considerations; and Remainder
  Gift Vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Is this just about art and a particular type of art?
A: No. This conference does not favor a particular style of artwork. The discussion will cover a variety of types of artwork, including antique and contemporary, modern and representational. It also will focus on issues related to all types of collectables, which includes (but is not limited to) art objects, sculpture, jewelry, automobiles/yachts, and other types of personal property.

Q: Is this just about investing in art?
A: No. Though there will be significant discussion about art investment strategies, this conference will focus on the issues of ownership, which include management of collections (art and collectibles), decession and divestiture, giving to museums or individuals, estate planning/inheritances, care, insurance, planning, appraisal, etc.

Q: How much does it cost to attend?
A: The price for registration is $1,095 if you register before May 23, but $1,395 after.

Q: Why is the conference being held in Newport and on these dates?
A: This conference is being held the day prior to a conference for high net worth individuals and their family office managers, many of whom have expressed an interest in learning more about the deep issues impacting these families and their art collections and collectible assets. Since that conference is held in Newport, it is logical to keep it convenient.

Q: Will meals be served during the conference?
A: Continental breakfast and a lunch will be provided. Cocktails will follow the event.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A. Should you be unable to attend the event, a prompt refund will be made for cancellations received in writing 45 business days before the start of the event. After 45 business days, registrations may be assigned to a future Opal Financial Group conference. All unpaid invoices will continue to be due for payment.

Substitutions may be made up to 24 business hours in advance of the conference. If an event is cancelled, Opal Financial Group is not responsible for any airfare, hotel or other costs incurred. Speakers, agenda and venue are subject to change without notice.

Q: Who is moderating the event?
A. Fine Art Connoisseur Publisher Eric Rhoads and Editor Peter Trippi will moderate the event.

Q: Is Advance Registration Required?
A. Yes. We do this for planning purposes. We are limited in the number of people we can accommodate and therefore need to know in advance that you are attending. Walk ups could potentially be turned away.

Q: What is the attire?
A. Business casual.

Q: Is press invited?
A. No. We know your privacy is an important issue. In addition we prefer to keep dialogue open, and feel that the presence of the press prevents open discussion.

Q: Are tapes of sessions available?
A. No. But presentation materials provided by the speakers in advance will be included in the conference CD-ROM, given to all attendees when checking in.

Q: Who should attend?
A: Anyone who considers them self the owner of a significant amount of artwork or collectibles or their financial/legal representatives: art dealers and art professionals, museum curators and directors, .individuals or art funds who are building collections and individuals who are planning estates.

Q: What benefits will I derive from attending?
A: There are many laws, of which most collectors are unaware. We often hear from collectors or their estates, which have been taxed unnecessarily because of decisions, which were made because these laws were not understood. Art and many collectibles have a unique set of regulations, which must be adhered to. Knowing these unique regulations and nuances could potentially prevent excessive tax issues, estate issues, and other problems. Our experts understand the traps collectors fall into, such as improper insurance riders resulting in unnecessary losses, improper appraisal certifications resulting in losses, improper planning for donations of collectibles, resulting in losses and taxation, and so on. You'll also hear about investment strategies, how to avoid paying improper prices, how to avoid purchase of fraudulent collectibles and artwork, what you should be doing with your collection if you're a young collector, and what you should be thinking about if you're over 55.
